Andiara De Souza

Born in Salvador / Bahia, Brazil - Andiara De Souza is the only girl in a family of three children and grew up in the beautiful city of Sao Salvador (capital of Bahia), a cultural cradle of Brazil. Andiara is of African, Portuguese and indigenous origins, keeping with the typical Brazilian miscegenation.

Showing a strong interest in music, she was influenced by Brazilian rhythms, funk, jazz and American blues. Starting off at only four years of age as the youngest soloist in her school choir, she has participated in numerous music competitions and has won many awards. At the age of six, she continued to develop her artistic skills by attending dance classes (Contemporary Jazz) and classical piano.

In early adolescence, she took theatre classes, allowing her to participate in such musical comedies known in Salvador as "O Boca do Inferno", which also allowed her to develop a strong stage presence. In addition, Andiara sang Funk and Blues tunes at several establishments in her hometown while completing her university studies in public relations. It is equally important not to forget her love for dance as she participated in numerous modern dance and jazz shows as both a dancer and choreographer.

In June of 2003, Andiara came to Montreal with the aspiration of learning French and living a new cultural experience. Upon her arrival, she was immediately seduced by the atmosphere and cultural diversity of the city. Since then, she has participated in various high profile Quebec cultural events, sharing the stage with renowned artists such as Paulo Ramos, Mario Pelchat, Luce Dufault, Florence K., Luck Mervil, Johanne Blouin, Lynda Thalia, Laurence Jalbert as well as Yves Lambert. Among these noteworthy events are the "FrancoFolies", the "Rhythms of the World Festival'', the "Montreal High Lights Festival", the "International Nuits d'Afrique Festival de Montreal", the “Soirée Culturelle pour la diversité du Québec”, the "Festival Gourmand" and shows such as "Belle et Bum" by Télé-Québec, "Routes-Montreal" by CBC Radio One, and ''Bons Baisers de France'' by Radio-Canada. She also participated as a guest artist for the albums ''Brasil em Febrero'' by Paulo Ramos and "Xangô" by the band Saramanda.

Née à Salvador/ Bahia, Brésil – Andiara De Souza est l'unique fille d'une famille de trois enfants et a grandi dans la belle ville de Sao Salvador (capitale de Bahia), berceau culturel du Brésil. Andiara possède des origines africaines, portugaises et indigènes, tout à l'image du métissage brésilien.

Manifestant un intérêt marqué pour la musique, elle a été influencée par les rythmes brésiliens, le funk, le jazz ainsi que le blues américain. Débutant comme la plus jeune soliste de la chorale de son école à seulement quatre ans, elle a participé à plusieurs concours de musique, où elle a remporté plusieurs prix. À l'âge de six ans, elle a continué à apprivoiser le domaine artistique en suivant des cours de danse (Jazz comtemporain) et de piano classique.

Au début de l'adolescense, elle a suivi des cours de théatre, lui permettant de participer à des comédies musicales reconnues à Salvador comme ''O Boca do Inferno'', et de développer sa forte présence sur scène. De plus, Andiara a chanté sur des airs de Funk et de Blues dans plusieurs établissements de sa ville natale tout en complétant ses études universitaires en relations publiques. Il ne faut surtout pas oublier son amour pour la danse, car elle a participé à plusieurs spectacles de danse moderne et de jazz en tant que danseuse et chorégraphe.

En Juin 2003, Andiara est venue à Montréal, avec l'objectif d'étudier le français et de vivre une nouvelle expérience culturelle. Elle a été séduite dès son arrivée par l'ambiance et la diversité culturelle de la ville. Depuis ce temps, elle a participé à d'importants événements cuturels québécois où elle a partagé la scène avec des artistes reconnus comme Paulo Ramos, Mario Pelchat, Luce Dufault, Florence K., Luck Mervil, Johanne Blouin, Lynda Thalie, Laurence Jalbert ainsi que Yves Lambert. Parmi ces événements, nous pouvons compter les ''Francofolies'', le ''Festival Rythmes du Monde'', le ''Festival Montréal en Lumières'', le ''Festival International Nuits d'Afrique'', La ''Soirée Culturelle pour la diversité du Québec'', le ''Festival Gourmand'' ainsi que des émissions telles que ''Belle et Bum'' de Télé-Québec, ''Routes-Montreal'' de CBC Radio One et ''Bons Baisers de France'' de Radio-Canada. Elle a aussi participé en tant qu’artiste invitée aux albums ''Brasil em Febrero'' de Paulo Ramos ainsi que ''Xangô'' du groupe Saramanda.

André Martin

Passionate about percussion for the past thirty years, André has had the opportunity to study in Cuba for several years as well as in both Brazil and Spain.

He collaborates with many noteworthy Quebec artists such as Paulo Ramos, Yoel Diaz, Jesus Cantero, Monica Freire, Edgar Bori, Myriam Allard, Carlos Placeres, Jean-François Groulx, The Merlin Factor, Cirque du Soleil, Ariane Moffat, Jeri Brown, and the Montreal Jazz Big Band.

He has been teaching Latin percussion at CEGEP St-Laurent since 2004.

Passionné de la percussion depuis plus de trente ans. Il a eu l’opportunité d’étudier à Cuba durant plusieurs années ainsi qu'au Brésil et en Espagne.

Il collabore avec plusieurs artistes significatifs au Québec dont Paulo Ramos, Yoël Diaz, Jesus Cantero, Monica Freire, Edgar Bori, Myriam Allard, Carlos Placeres, Jean-François Groulx, The Merlin Factor, le Cirque du Soleil, Ariane Moffat, Jeri Brown, le Montreal Jazz Big Band.

Il enseigne la percussion latine au CEGEP de St-Laurent depuis 2004.

Alain Picotte

Alain Picotte begins to play music at the age of 13 in a self-taught manner. He studied bass at CEGEP St-Laurent with Tony di Chiaro, bass (fretless) and arrangement at Concordia University with Don Habib, piano and arrangement with Jan Jarczyk and improvisation with Charles Allison.

Alain Picotte commence à s’engager à la musique à l’âge de 13 ans de façon autodidacte. François d’Amour

A native of Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec, François takes his first breath into a saxophone at the age of 14 and it's love at first sight even if he had always wanted to play the drums. He would devote his whole life to music and continued his musical studies in high school at the Ste-Foy Campus and the CEGEP de Ste-Foy and St-Laurent and at the University of Montreal.

His sound and unique style would soon make him a very highly demanded musician within both jazz and pop music circles. We have seen and heard him next to Michel Cusson, Alain Caron, Gino Vannelli, Lulu Hughes, Marc Hervieux, Nikki Yannofsky, Robert Charlebois, Claude Dubois, Michel Pagliaro, the Whip Cream band, Lynda Lemay, Bob Walsh, Lara Fabian, Marie-Denise Pelletier, Paolo Ramos, Isabelle Boulay and many others. In countless TV and radio shows and in recordings with many Quebec and international artists.

Natif de Rivière-du-loup, c’est à l’âge de 14 ans que François D'Amours souffle pour la première fois dans un saxophone. C'est le coup de foudre avec l'instrument même si il avait toujours manifesté l'envie de jouer de la batterie. Il y consacrera donc toute sa vie et poursuivera ses études en musique à l’école secondaire Le Campus de Ste-Foy ainsi qu'aux CEGEP de Ste-Foy et de St-Laurent ainsi qu’à l'Université de Montréal.

Sa sonorité et son style unique feront vite de lui quelqu’un de très en demande dans le milieu tant du jazz que de la musique populaire. On a pu le voir et l'entendre aux côtés de Michel Cusson, Alain Caron, Gino Vannelli, Lulu Hughes, Marc Hervieux, Nikki Yannofsky, Robert Charlebois, Claude Dubois, Michel Pagliaro, Le groupe Whip Cream, Lynda Lemay, Bob Walsh, Lara Fabian, Marie-Denise Pelletier, Paolo Ramos, Isabelle Boulay et bien d’autres. Dans d'inombrables émissions de télé et radio ainsi que sur disque avec plusieurs artistes québécois et internationaux.

Frédéric Salter

Sound engineer for over 30 years, Frédéric works with both studio and live entertainment sound. Working since 1983 for the Montreal International Jazz Festival, he specializes in jazz and world music and has worked with the likes of Paolo Ramos, Saramanda, Lorraine Desmarais, Jean-Pierre Zanella, among others. He has also been nominated three times at the Félix awards.

Ingénieur du son depuis plus de 30 ans. Œuvré autant dans le domaine du spectacle que du studio. Travaille depuis 1983 au Festival de Jazz de Montreal. Specialiste du Jazz et world music. Travaillé avec Paolo Ramos, Saramanda, Lorraine Desmarais, Jean-Pierre Zanella , entre autres. Nominé a 3 reprises aux Félix.

Jean-François Groulx

Mainly a pianist, Jean-François Groulx, also multi-instrumentalist, has played alongside many pop, world beat and jazz musicians. He has participated in the creation of many albums as both a musician and creator and also has seven albums to his own credit. He currently works alongside Gilles Vigneault, Edgar Bori and is a member of the house band on popular French TV show "En direct de l’Univers".

D’abord pianiste, Jean-François Groulx, aussi multi-instrumentiste, a joué aux côtés de nombreux artistes de la scène populaire, world beat et jazz. Il a participé à de nombreux albums comme musicien et créateur. Il compte de même 7 albums à son nom. Il accompagne actuellement Gilles Vigneault , Edgar Bori et est membre du house band sur l’émission télé “ En direct de l’ Univers”..

Jocelyn Couture

Born on March 23, 1966 in Victoriaville, Quebec, this Arian fire sign was destined to play the trumpet with the passion and intensity that we are familiar with today. Jocelyn was like many other trumpeters, influenced by Maynard Ferguson. Moreover, Maynard himself asked Jocelyn to join his orchestra "Be Bop Nouveau" for a summer tour but other commitments in Montreal prevented the young musician from joining the ranks of this prestigious band at this time. Maynard's friend, Vic Vogel, had suggested that he be nicknamed "the kid" for this tour.

Jocelyn continues to be a member of the Vic Vogel family (orchestra) since 25 years and Jocelyn's artistic approach relies heavily on Vic's influence. After studying at Vanier CEGEP, Jocelyn continued his studies at McGill University where he recently completed a Masters degree in interpretation. The tribute to Maynard Ferguson entitled the "MF Project" is one of the projects Jocelyn has set up since finishing his studies along with the brass band "Funkxie Groove". He is currently a regular member of the following groups: Christine Jensen Big Band, Joe Sullivan Big Band, l’orchestre Nation de Montréal and the Altsys Jazz Orchestra.

He teaches at Vanier, St. Laurent and Drummondville CEGEPs as well as at McGill University. In addition to teaching he has appeared on stage alongside Alain Caron, Michel Cusson, Rob McConnell, Michel Legrand, David Liebman, Dave Douglas, Kenny Wheeler, Maria Schneider, Gino Vannelli, Patti Labelle, Celine Dion, Deborah Cox, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Lou Rawls, Bobby Vinton, Kenny Rogers, Petula Clark, Frankie Valley and many others. He has also played on stage and participated in the recording of albums from the following local artists: Céline Dion, Garou, Robert Charlebois, Cirque du Soleil, France D'Amour, Ginette Reno, Daniel Lavoie, Martin Deschamps, Linda Lemay and Martine St-Clair.

Né à Victoriaville le 23 mars 1966, ce bélier, cheval de feu était prédestiné à jouer de la trompette avec la fougue et l’intensité qu’on lui connaît aujourd’hui. Jocelyn fut, comme beaucoup d’autres trompettistes, influencé par Maynard Ferguson. D’ailleurs, Maynard lui-même a demandé à Jocelyn de devenir membre de son orchestre “Be Bop Nouveau” pour une tournée estivale, mais d’autres engagements à Montréal ont empêché le jeune musicien de joindre les rangs de ce groupe prestigieux. C’est l’ami de Maynard, Vic Vogel, qui avait recommandé celui qu’il surnommait “the kid” pour cette tournée.

Jocelyn fait toujours partie de la famille (orchestre) de Vic Vogel depuis 25 ans. Vic est une grande référence pour Jocelyn dans sa démarche artistique.

Christopher Smith

Christopher has written numerous compositions and arrangements in diverse and various styles for a variety of bands. He has played with Vic Vogel, Denny Christianson, the Orchestre Symphonique de Longueuil, John Pizzarelli, Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler, Ray Anderson, the Drifters, Johnny Mathis and Henry Mancini, among others.

Presently he regularly plays the trombone and tuba with the Altsys Jazz Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Sherbrooke, the Opus Lib brass quintet and Streetnix. He also directs the J.L. Big Band in Montreal and his own big band Big Bang Orchestra. Christopher received his Masters degree in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music and received his bachelor's degree in classical trombone from McGill University.

He has won awards from Downbeat Magazine and the International Association for Jazz Education for his compositions and arrangements. He teaches jazz composition and arrangement at Vanier College, where he also directs harmony.

Cascarilla

A native of Havana who arrived in Montreal in 1990, Luis Antonio Gil, named "Cascarilla" paved his way as a professional drummer by initially playing with Big Band in the seventies, travelling between Cuba and Eastern Europe in the State service, and then as a jazz drummer and with other big combos over the years.

It was in Montreal that he honed his jazz style, accompanying Charlie Biddles regularly at his restaurant. It was there that he met Billy Georgette and Johnny Scott, with whom he would later play with. He also shared the stage with François Bourassa, Glen Barclay, Eval Manigat and Paquito Rivera, during a visit to Montreal.

Raised in a religious family in the (Afro-Cuban) Lukumi religion and participating in popular events since childhood, Cascarilla made his debut performing in street carnivals as a child percussionist in traditional fashion. Born at the nerve center of rhythm, he is instilled with the energy of old 60s Havana and the stories are numerous. Later he focused upon studying musical theory and obtained diplomas from of the Havana Conservatory of Music and the Ignacio Cervantes professional school. Before stepping foot on Quebec soil, he had already played with Omara Portuondo, Los Papines Ruben Rubalcaba and had played regularly at the Cabaret Capri and performed on radio and on television under the direction of many great orchestra leaders.

Originaire de La Havane, arrivé en 1990 à Montréal, Luis Antonio Gil, dit “Cascarilla”a fait son chemin de batteur professionnel, d’abord de Big Band, dans les années soixante dix, entre Cuba et l’Europe de l’est, au service de l’État, et ensuite comme batteur de jazz et de grands combos au fil des années.

C’est à Montréal qu’il peaufine son style en jazz en accompagnant Charlie Biddles régulièrement dans son restaurant. C’est là qu’il fait la rencontre de Billy Georgette et Johnny Scott avec qui il jouera par la suite. Il a partagé aussi la scène avec François Bourassa, Glen Barklay, Eval Manigat et Paquito Rivera, lors d’un passage à Montréal.

Élevé dans une famille religieuse de la religion Lukumi (afro-cubaine) et participant à des événements populaires depuis son enfance, Cascarilla a fait ses débuts dans les carnavals de rue comme enfant percussionniste issu de la tradition. Né dans ce centre névralgique du rythme, il est imprégné de l’énergie de La Havane des années 60. Les anecdotes sont nombreuses. C’est par la suite qu’il s’est dirigé vers la théorie musicale en obtenant les diplômes du Conservatoire de musique de La Havane et l’école Professionnelle Ignacio Cervantes. Avant de fouler le sol québécois, il avait déjà accompagné Omara Portuondo, Los Papines, Ruben Rubalcaba, et avait été en poste au Cabaret Capri et à la radio y Television sous la direction de nombreux grands chef d’orchestres.
